This idea was created in the fall of 2001 by Joseph Ackerman and pitched to Krispy Kreme Doughnuts (Midwest) by Joe and Nathan that same summer. Krispy Kreme does not do TV advertising and declined. Undeterred Rouse Productions decided the idea deserved a chance and produced it independently. Swapping the doughnut for chicken the commercial won a national KFC advertising contest in 2003.
